Our topic this term is taking inspiration from WOW (The World of Wearable Arts show.) We will be creating costumes out of reused items.
Check out some of these pages with photos of previous WOW entries, and costumes others students have made. You might find some inspiration of something you want to create.

Fantastic poems by Room 18 authors
We have been learning to write a variety of different styles of poems using different poetic techniques. Have a read of some of these fantastic poems. See if you can find examples of rhyme (same ending sound), alliteration (same first letter repeated), metaphors and similes (comparing two unlike things).
The Storm
By Hamish
Lightning streaked past as bright as the sun.
Thunder boomed like drums over head.
The sky was greyer than an old picture.
The rain stung like bee stings.
Trees fell like jenga towers
I ran inside faster than light.
I remember
By Kate
I remember Heidi with her soft and luxurious fur.
I remember her tail swishing happily behind her.
I remember her sweet and calming purr as she got patted by me.
Colours
By Saskia
What is orange? My fluro socks sitting on my feet.
What is green? The leaves rustling in the trees.
What is pink? My ruler bending and twisting around.
What is blue? The sky dotted with fluffy white clouds.
What is yellow? A lemon skinning as bright as the sun.
Bunnies
By Sarah S
Bunny, bunny, bunny.
Black, white, grey bunny.
Big, small, medium bunny.
Bouncing, hopping, eating bunny.
Sleeping, running, cuddling bunny.
Bunny, bunny, bunny.
Football
By Tom
Saves the ball
Dribbling up the wing
We're all in the big stadium
The big TV's on the sides
Nice pass down the line
Hot dogs, donuts, hot chips

Flowers (A limerick)
By Lily
There once was a rose from Welly
It was a little bit smelly.
It was almost going to die
But instead she started to fly.
Oh, did I mention she is called Kelly.
Tree (A question poem)
By Harrison
Oh tree
Where are your leaves?
Why aren't you growing?
Is it autumn already?
Why are the branches falling?

Calendar Art
For our calendar art we had two choices. The painted circles (that you saw us making in the last blog past) or a trickier drawing of wobbly 3-D columns. Both pieces of art look fantastic. Here are our finished products.

Working on our calendar art
Today we made a start on our calendar art.
We used black paper and colourful paint.
First we drew 5-7 lines.
Then we painted the background of some of the spaces we had made.
We talked about different ways to use circles and donuts. We could change the size, the number of colours in each space and whether the colours touched or not.
We also looked at the colour wheel and what colours would look good together.
Most of us are really happy with ours. But some of us were very critical of our own art work.
Stay tuned for the finished products soon.

Cheetahs By Blake
The cheetah is by far the fastest land animal with a top speed of 121 km. The cheetah can hold this for 30 seconds then it has to stop.
The cheetah, unlike most cats, has non-retractable claws that act like spike shoes. The cheetah is literally build for speed from the inside out. First the cheetah's aerodynamic face with wind pushing smooth past it and big nostrils and lungs to hold lots of air. Their bendy spine stretches out about 1 or more meters absorbing the landing shock. The cheetahs bones are light and durable meaning the cheetahs legs can move light and fast. A big heart means it can breath smoothly. Finally it's big light tail. The cheetah's tail is one of the most important parts. The tail is used for sharp turns. So the cheetah can literally turn in mid air and keeps it's balance when chasing pray.
Cheetahs can be found in South Africa. Their habitat is on small mounds of dirt surrounded by tall, dry grass. The cheetah has a perfect camouflage coat which lets them sneak up really close to their pray. The cheetahs diet is buffalo, wildebeest, gazelle, springbok, zebra, tiger cub and almost any animal it can catch.
Cheetahs can live about 10-15 years on the wild and 20 years in captivity.
Cheetahs can be killed by packs of lions, hyenas, falcon birds or people.
Cheetahs are my favourite animal but lots of cheetahs are dying. There are only around 20,000 cheetahs remaining. So we need to help them survive.

Bunnies By Sarah D
Bunnies
By Sarah D
Bunnies are cute little
animals with long ears.
Physical Features
Bunnies have long ears and
claws. They have four little legs with a small tail. They also have a little
nose and cute eyes. I love the eyes.
Eating and Drinking
Bunnies eat special rabbit
mix and vegtables They drink water out of a bottle.
Habitat
Bunnies can live in your
house and in a hutch outdoors. It will need to be cleaned every once in a
while.
Behaviour
Bunnies are very curious so
make sure that sharp objects are out reach. But some bunnies can be very
fierce. They are really fun to play with.
Babies
Bunnies have little babies
called kittens. Kittens are born without fur. Its best to look at them when
they are three weeks old.
Friends
Bunnies live in groups in the
wild so they will like a friend. If you want to put a male and a female
together you need to make sure the male is neutred. Otherwise they will have
lots of kittens and you can not look after them.
I really like bunnies because
they are cute.
Cotton the chinchilla visits Room 18
Ellie wrote:
I am going to tell you about my chinchilla. First I will tell you the food she eats. It's dry bananas, dry apricots, peanuts and grain. She only drinks water. Her habitat is her cage, her bed and the couch. She nocturnal so she sleeps in the day.
Harrison wrote:
Ellie has a pet chinchilla called Cotton. She is 6 and she is cute. She has the ears of a bunny, the whiskers of a cat and she is SUPER soft.
Amy wrote:
Cotton is really soft and feels like wool. She's really cute and she's got big ears. She looked funny when Ellie tried to take her out of her cage because she didn't want to come out. She's got a soft nose. She climbs all over the cage or in her den/box. On the bottom of the cage there is newspaper and food is hanging from the roof.
Hamish wrote:
When the Chinchilla came to class, we patted it's soft fur. It's nose twitched, as it smelt for food. It hid inside the box, which was in its cage. The chinchilla came this morning but it's going home at morning tea time.
